 Deadlines

We will negotiate these deadlines (and add other progress check points) as we move through the semester.  But this will give you a sense of how you should be making progress through the semester, and into next semester.

 

Deadline Task

Fall 2009

   
September 8-15 Visit your Initial Comps Advisor with a paragraph summary of your Comps Topic.
September 15  Comps Advisors confirmed. Class meeting.
October 6 Check-in meeting. Bring Topic, Abstract, Brief Outline and Sources. YOU SHOULD BE MEETING WITH ADVISORS WEEKLY. Class meeting.
October 13 Bring Draft Comps Project Proposals to class for review. Class Meeting.
October 16 Comps Project Project proposals (at least 3 pages) due to Math Dept at 5pm by email.

Project Proposals must answer:
0) Who is your Comps Advisor?
1) What is the title?
2) What is the abstract?
3) What sources have you looked at AND how will you use them (annotated bibliography-- at least 5 sources recommended)
4) What are the mathematical topics and ideas to be used and explained in the paper?
5) What course work prepares you for this topic?

Proposals should include a reasonably clear outline of the entire paper

October 26 Department Decision on Comps Project proposals made.
October 27 Comps Project proposals returned. Selection of oral presentation order made. Class meeting
November 10 Check-in on progress towards penultimate draft. Class meeting.
November 23 First Complete Draft of Paper due to Me (and Advisors) in hard copy form. All drafts must have
1) 100-word abstract
2) Works cited page
3) Thesis sentence bolded in the introductory paragraph
December 9 Penultimate Draft of Comps Paper due To Me (and Advisors) by 5pm by email.
   
Spring 2010
   
Second Week Of Classes. Comments on penultimate draft returned to students. Class Meeting.
End of February Outline of Comps Talk prepared (in PowerPoint) and submitted by email
March 5 Final draft of Comps Papers due by email at 5pm to Me.
March 25 Senior Comprehensives Talks will be conducted in 4 consecutive weeks on Thursdays 4:30-6pm in Fowler 302.
All Senior and Junior Math majors must attend all talks.

Gabriela Rodriguez will deliver her Senior Comps presentation.

April 1 Senior Comprehensives Talks will be conducted in 4 consecutive weeks on Thursdays 4:30-6pm in Fowler 302.
All Senior and Junior Math majors must attend all talks.

Zhengyi (Jenny) Zhou will deliver an Honors presentation.

April 8 Senior Comprehensives Talks will be conducted in 4 consecutive weeks on Thursdays 4:30-6pm in Fowler 302.
All Senior and Junior Math majors must attend all talks.

Elizabeth Mojarro and Jason Jebbia will each deliver their Senior Comps presentation.

April 19 Senior Comprehensives Grades determined by Department faculty and communicated to Registrar
Early May Graduating Math Majors Party!!! (and presentation of the Benedict Freedman Senior Prize in Mathematics)
