Mathematics 201 is a community-based learning course engaging Occidental
College students in mathematics education as a social justice issue.
It is usually team-taught by
two faculty members in a weekly seminar format. This semester (fall 2013) the course is
intended to be taught by Professor Ron Buckmire and Alan Knoerr.
Math 201 provides Oxy students an opportunity to engage directly and intellectually with one of the most important issues affecting Los Angeles Very few students in the Los Angeles Unified School District are assessed to be "proficient" in mathematics. Algebra is required for high school graduation, yet many students struggle with even simpler math than algebra. Failure in algebra has been correlated with failure to complete high school.
Math
201 has developed from partnerships between Oxy's
Math Department, local
schools, and
national organizations such as the Algebra Project and
the Young People's Project. These long-term
partnerships enable this course to have a significant positive effect on math
education in our community.
Each week, participants:
The course culminates in an individual or group project.
Meet in a seminar to discuss readings and research on power, community organizing, school culture, the politics of education, mathematics pedagogy and other relevant topics;
work with teachers and students at local schools; and
write critical personal reflections relating their experience, work and reading.
