CSP 6: (Queer 2.0) LGBT Rights in the Internet Era
Fall 2013

SECTION II: LGBT RIGHTS IN THE OBAMA ERA (1961 TO NOW)

Writing Assignment #2 (25 points)

Begin assignment: Monday October 7th
Hand-in assignment (via Googledocs): Wednesday October 16th, 11:45am

Objective: Reflect on the media depictions of marginalized groups.

Choice 1
Write a short (1-2 page / 350-600 word) reflection on the depiction of sexual minorities (LGBT people) in the popular media, as it is analyzed in The Celluloid Closet.

Choice 2
Write a short (1-2 page / 350-600 word) reflection on the depiction of racial minorities (African-American, Latino/a, Asian/Pacific Islander, Arabic, etc.) in the popular media, as it is analyzed in Ethnic Notions.

Instructions
Your reflection should include examples of depiction of a particular marginalized group and analyze how the negative messages associated with the group you selected are communicated to the audience in the specific media example you discuss. You should explicitly identify the "type" (e.g. Mammy, Sissy, Black Brute, Tragic Mulatto, Killer Lesbian, Pervert) and explicate the social meanings ("scripts") associated with the type and how your example challenges or confirms those scripts.

Since this is a reflection and not a critical essay you do not have to have an analytic thesis but you should have a descriptive thesis sentence which summarizes the main point of your reflection (and should be in a bold font).
