In the year that Charles Martel and the Franks he led vanquished the Moors in the Battle of Tours, thus halting their intrusion into the north, very little happened in the world of Mathematics. The only mathematician of any note alive at the time was Bede the Venerable, who is better known as a theologian and a historian than a mathematician. Bede's life would end a scant three years later.
Bede the Venerable was an English Benedictine monk and scholar. He was born in 672 (or 673) A.D. and lived until 735 A.D. He was very scholastic by nature, and as part of his duties in the monastery, he taught students grammar, Latin, Greek, Hebrew, astronomy, mathematics, rhetoric, and music. He was also a prolific author who published close to 40 works. Most of his writing concerned topics of an ecclesiastical nature, and he was famous in his own time as a theologian. In more recent times, however, he is more famous for his work as an historian and his work The Ecclesiastical History of the English People is the most complete work on English history from the Roman occupation to 731, the year it was completed.
His contributions to the field of mathematics are primarily limited
to chronology. In particular, he focused much of his attention to
the art and science of telling time. Some of his efforts were directed
toward determining the date of Easter. It is largely as the result
of his efforts in this field that the standard Christian calendar was widely
adopted and that the use of Anno Domini (A.D.) for dating reference
became popular. His chronological efforts required the construction
and use of tables of calculation, Easter tables, and calendars. His
scientific works also included a discussion of arithmetic, geometry, astronomy,
and finger reckoning.
