Mathematics produced before the Renaissance are not considered to be the most significant to the development of math, but the math developed was key to the demands of that time.  Leone Alberti, was born in Genoa, Italy and was educated by his father.  Having initially pursued a career in law, Alberti shifted his interests into the study of 3-dimensional objects. He wrote Della Pictura in 1435.  This work is considered to be the first general treatise on the laws of perspective.  Alberti is most remembered for aiding Toscanelli in producing the maps Columbus used for his voyage to the Americas. Alberti made maps by applying his knowledge of geometrical mappings.  Finally, Alberti's work in cryptography also includes the first example of a frequency table.
