About Dana Plays

This year the Consortium for the Visiting Artist Series is delighted to present Dana Plays, the first artist & filmmaker for our series, "Artists and the Moving Image".

Dana Plays is a filmmaker, video and interactive digital media artist and Associate Professor of Film at Occidental College in Los Angeles. Her work has garnered numerous awards, including some from the Black Maria, Ann Arbor and Houston International film festivals. Her works have been featured at the Seattle Film Festival, the Pacific Film Archives at UC/Berkeley, Cinemateque in San Francisco, the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, the Montreal Nouveau Film Festival and the Leipzig Documentary Film Festival, among others.

John Columbus, Director, Black Maria Film Festival describes Play's award winning film Nuclear Family as "An arresting, deconstructed, yet nostalgic work that resonates with optically reprinted images from the 1950's. Vintage government films in which mannequins record the effects of nuclear blast experiments, science films depicting animal experiments, and home movies are interwoven so as to comment upon and recollect the notion of family during the era which gave birth to the nuclear age."

Dana Plays will speak on October 23^rd at 11:30 AM at the Spartan Theater. Plays will also speak on October 22^nd at noon at the EWU Art Auditorium and at 7:00 PM at the NW MAC Auditorium.

All talks will last approximately one hour and are free and open to the public.
